Howdy folks,
As godawful as it is to have to come back to everyday life after the magical experience that was Bonnaroo 2007, I'm home again & I s'pose I should try to write up a little review of how fantastic Martha was. Okay. First of all: she rocked. Second: she was fucking gorgeous. Martha played with her bass and drums combo, which is my favourite way to hear her live actually. It really packs a punch. Bill Dobrow was behind the drum kit and Brad Albetta, of course, pounded out some fierce basslines. Her delightful cousin Sam McTavey was in the audience (Sloan's son). I swear she said that her cousins (plural) were there, but I didn't see Lily anywhere.
She played in This Tent on Sunday, the last day of the festival, right before Feist & right after Elvis Perkins (who is worth checking out). I underestimated the drawing power of Martha Wainwright at Bonnaroo & even though I had been staking out my place up front & center for 50 minutes before she was scheduled to take the stage...could only manage to squeeze in 2 feet right of center, 3 lucky kids back. Still not too bad. A very excited Megan (GrandPoo OfAwesome) happened to sneak in right beside me. I believe there were some other Message Boarders around me; who were you guys... introduce yourself! As far as I could tell the huge tent was filled pretty nicely.
Martha took the stage shortly after 4:30. She opened with "Factory," which I thought was the perfect intro song for the Festival. Her voice was in great shape, very playful. I could tell she was about to put on a fabulous show. She then announced, to my absolute delight, that she would be playing a bunch of new songs. Hell yeah! That's what I paid the $239 ticket price for. She did "Bleeding all over You," which is great with the full band! Much poppier than when performed solo. And then she broke into another new song called "You Cheated Me." I just gotta say, for the record, it's fuckin' great. Really, really fuckin' great! It will be a hit, I swear to god. It's different from anything else I've heard from her. Still very Martha, and not like some pretty little ditty one might write to appease a label. I remember she said at the Save Darfur show in December that all her new songs were sad & depressing & there wasn't going to be any hits on the new album...but I just don't think that will be the case. She definitely appeared very happy, almost giddy at times.
She played "Far Away" & then another new song, which I think might be called "Waiting for You." It was also pretty good, but I think still needs to evolve a little. It's apparently somewhat difficult to play. I remember thinking, my god, this sounds so much like Maria Muldaur. She does that adorable little squeaky, girly thang with her voice a lot in this song. It makes me wanna die every time I hear her do that. Gah...I love it.
Okay...next she played "Jesus & Mary." I'd only heard it solo before, but lemme just tell ya, it's 10 times more amazing with the band. Holy fucking cow. It's not quite as creepy. And I have no idea why, but when she got to the fucking bridge of the song, I started crying uncontrollably. I couldn't stop, I'm such a dork/pussy. It was just so beautiful. Just the most perfect thing. Very intense. I just felt every miserable moment of my life culminate in those lyrics. Maybe it was the mushrooms? Fuck, I'm crying right now as I type this remembering how amazing it was. I was that crying girl from American Idol. So I actually kept tearing up at various moments throughout the rest of the set. Basically anytime Martha opened her mouth or looked in my direction.
Okay, I can't type anymore. Jesus. The rest of the set was very, very good. I love all the new songs. She announced the album would be out in January of 2008. She also cleverly tied Rufus into things by saying, "How fucking great is Rufus' new record? I don't know if I wanna slit my wrists or run screaming in the streets how fucking proud I am of him." Girl, knows how to convert 'em. I also tried to bootleg the show. I'm not the best bootlegger, so please don't complain about the quality of it. It's not that shitty. Download the individual songs below. I also took some photos. I'm obviously not the best photographer either, cos they're blurry pieces of shit (see below). There are some better ones here. Sam was kind enough to snap the one of Martha & me. God, I look so dirty & fucked up. Okay, last thing: if you have any opportunities to see Martha live this summer, I don't care how much it costs, you should just do it. She's better than ever. And I am so happy I was fortunate enough to get another chance.
